Abacus Actuaries NFP (“Abacus”) is an Illinois Not-for-Profit Corporation with its registered office in Chicago, Illinois. We respect your privacy and we will strive to ensure that any personal information we collect about you is used conscientiously and appropriately.

 

Why we collect and use your personal information

Abacus will collect, maintain and use certain personal information about you in order to communicate with you about our activities, events, programs and services.  We may also use your personal information for our internal analysis; to conduct surveys or marketing polls; to improve the content of our website and the relevance of our programs and activities; to carry out our activities; and to improve our procedures. Information you voluntarily provide may be included in a directory of our members and allies, or may be used in messaging applications, private online communities, forums or social media platforms.

How we collect your personal information

Your personal information may be collected from Web pages that are specifically designed to collect information, such as membership applications, volunteer forms, event registration forms, donation forms, online questionnaires, resume submissions, job postings, and other forms you complete or submit to us.  Personal information may also be obtained from transactions you conduct with us; your attendance at events and programs; other communications you have with us; and any other information you provide to us or to third parties who are assisting us with these activities.

 

What types of information we may collect

We may collect, store and use the following types of information:  

  • Personally identifiable information:  First and last name; telephone or cell phone number; residential address; e-mail address or URL; occupation and/or employer; job title or function; salary range; years of practice or areas of practice; other associations with which you may be affiliated; your signature; your photograph. If you make a donation to Abacus or purchase any products or services from us, we may collect your credit card number or other payment or account information. We do not give out your credit card or other account information to third parties unless you authorize us to do so or if it is necessary to fulfill our responsibilities, such as completing the transaction, delivering a product, or servicing your order.

  • Sensitive data:  Certain types of personal information may be regarded as sensitive data, such as information relating to your race, nationality, ethnicity or ancestral identity; age or birth date; marital status; gender, gender identity or orientation; religious affiliation or political persuasion. It is our policy not to collect, store or use such information except for statistical purposes only, and we will not disclose such information except on an aggregate and de-identified basis.  

  • Tracking data:  We may collect certain information automatically when you use the website, such as the IP addresses and domain names of visitors, browser type, history of pages viewed and other information about your use of the website. When we collect this tracking information, we endeavor to remove any identifying elements by combining it with information about other individuals and/or by removing characteristics that make the information personally identifiable to you. We collect this information for site administration purposes, such as to analyze this data for trends and statistics, or to customize our website content to deliver a better experience to our users. 

 

When we may disclose or transfer your personal information

We may share your personal information with third parties who assist us in providing services to you or to carry out one or more of the purposes described above, and in other cases in which we have your authorization.

 

We may share your personal information with sponsors, partners, and exhibitors who participate in Abacus conferences, programs, and events; contact information for conference, program and event participants may be made available to individuals serving as presenters, faculty, mentors or facilitators. Any request by an external organization for a mailing list of our members, allies or affiliates must be approved on a case-by-case basis, and the organization must agree that the information will only be used for the specifically approved communication.

 

We may disclose your personal information when required by law or when we have a good faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a subpoena, court order, governmental investigation or other legal process. We may also share your personal information if we believe it is necessary to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person or the protection of Abacus’ rights or property.

How we protect your personal information

While there is no such thing as perfect security, we will take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from unauthorized access or processing, pursuant to policies, technical measures and internal controls. We will periodically review our information collection, storage and processing practices to protect against unauthorized access or use.

How to unsubscribe from marketing emails

If you do not wish to continue receiving commercial emails from Abacus – i.e., emails primarily intended to solicit donations or to promote the services or programs we offer – you may request that we discontinue sending those emails. To request a discontinuation of commercial emails, please contact us at contact@abacusactuaries.org. We will continue to send you relationship or transactional emails.

 

Changes to our policies and this Privacy Notice

We reserve the right, from time to time and in our discretion, to modify or update our privacy policies and practices and this Privacy Notice.  Any material changes will be posted on this page.
