MARCH 2023 - IMPROVING YOUR EXECUTIVE PRESENCE

It was a great turnout at our most recent event on 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞! We hope that those who attended found the panel discussion useful and applicable to advancing your careers.

A big THANK YOU to all of our panelists Ann Chai, Sally Ezra, Allen Kwan, Seigo Ishimaru, and moderator Charles Zhu for taking the time to join our panel and sharing your perspectives on Executive Presence! Also, thanks to Joyce Wang for planning the event and the Society of Actuaries for hosting on their Zoom platform!

Some key takeaways from the panel discussion:

  1. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜: Don't change who you are to fit in to the perceived stereotypical "Executive".

  2. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Each executive has a different style, and it is important to understand the audience when you communicate to them.

  3. 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬: Actuaries are risk-averse by nature. To be an executive, you have to be able and be willing to voice your views or ideas and be ok with objections, and also be willing to take chances with your careers by taking on additional responsibilities that you are not comfortable with.

  4. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: Be intentional in developing the skills you need to get to an executive role.

  5. 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: Having mentors is extremely important, whether within your workplace or outside.
